A former Harris County sheriff’s detective has been charged with sexual assault of a child, accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl from Shoreacres.

Officer Richard Allen Dorman, 59, was arraigned in a Harris County courtroom on Friday.

State District Judge Mark Kent Ellis ordered that Dorman’s bail remain at $30,000.

He was being held in the county jail.

Harris County deputy constables arrested Dorman without incident on Thursday at his home, said Shoreacres Police Chief Randall French.

According to public documents, Dorman’s current residence is in Pasadena.

“It’s just a bad thing that happened,” French said. “It involved a retired Harris County deputy, but that is not going to deter us in our investigation. We treat all cases the same.”

Shoreacres is a small town bordering La Porte on Galveston Bay.

Prosecutor Justin Wood said Dorman was charged after a girl recently told her mother that he assaulted her at his house in Shoreacres around Thanksgiving of 2007. Dorman lived on the same street.

Dorman began working at the Sheriff’s Office in January 1977 and retired in 2003 as a detective, county officials said.

Dorman now is employed as a field maintenance technician for the Harris County Toll Road Authority, said Patrick Ferral, the agency’s human resources manager. Ferral said Dorman was hired in December 2006.

Ferral said Dorman can continue reporting to work but the authority will monitor his case to determine whether any changes are needed in his employment status.

“All he’s been is accused,” Ferral said.

The offense is a first- degree felony, punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison if he is convicted.
